Innovations: Performance with New Customer Promises More Business
In an effort to continuously expand the value-added services Elrae offers to its customers, Elrae recently took on a welded assembly job for a new customer.
The part, previously hand welded by the customer, produced large amounts of scrap at low efficiencies. Elrae’s Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) team studied the project and felt automating the process would save time, money, and reduce waste. The team, headed by Bill Crosby, took the bull by the horns and purchased a new automated TIG welder for the job.
The new process, utilizing the new equipment, allows the part to be rotated automatically enabling the numerous welds required on each part to be done quickly, efficiently, and with minimal scrap. ESI team member and Plant Engineer, Mr. Kevin Gerace, customized the new equipment and fixturing. In fact, the improvements made by Kevin and his staff reduced scrap on this project to ½ of 1%! The realized increased efficiency allowed Elrae to offer the customer aggressive pricing and Elrae is confident that based on our performance, a long time relationship with the customer will be imminent.
